The challenge
High fluctuations in electricity prices in the energy markets are increasingly jeopardizing the security of supply, value creation and profitability of industrial enterprises, as production costs are significantly increased.
High fluctuations in electricity prices in the energy markets are increasingly jeopardizing the security of supply, value creation and profitability of industrial enterprises, as production costs are significantly increased.
The research project “Intelligent, data-driven and grid-stabilizing energy supply management for industrial companies” (ILLumINE) was initiated as a joint research project by MAN Energy Solutions, the Fraunhofer Project Group for Business Informatics and XITASO.
The digital intelligent, data-driven and grid-stabilizing platform (IDNE) is an energy management platform in the sense of a smart grid. Thanks to the integrated view of Energy 4.0 and Industry 4.0 requirements, this leads to cost and revenue-optimized control of the energy supply in real time.
Ensuring self-sufficient energy supply during a power outage
due to short-term decoupling from the public grid
Flexible design by entering individual goals, framework conditions
and information on the company's energy supply
Conversion to self-generating systems such as battery storage
or gas engines as a quick response to rising electricity prices
Generating additional profits from the production of energy surpluses in high-price phases
The digital intelligent, data-driven and grid-stabilizing energy supply management platform (IDNE) uses a complex linear optimization model with multi-layered software architecture to identify the optimal energy mix of conventional and renewable self-generation plants, energy storage systems and energy markets. The IDNE platform meets the requirements of network stability and cost efficiency through the two-layer software architecture.
For example, Layer 1, which is responsible for network stability, was converted into C++ to ensure the platform’s need for rapid response to instability. The second layer is responsible for optimizing iLLumINE’s business administration. The optimization model was implemented in this layer by XITASO using .NET Core in C. The user’s interaction with the platform takes place via a web client, the frontend is developed with React in TypeScript & JavaScript.

ILLumINE was initiated in January 2018 as a joint research project by MAN Energy Solutions, the Fraunhofer Project Group for Business Informatics and XITASO.
The project is funded with 1.4 million euros by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.
In close cooperation with the research partners, XITASO develops the software of the IDNE and advises on software-relevant topics as well as in project management. After completion of the project, MAN Energy Solutions will make the platform available to its customers.
