An ambulance must be ready for action at all times. Downtime not only incurs high costs, but can also jeopardise life-saving operations. Checking all equipment for completeness and maintenance is often costly and time-consuming, especially when using products from different manufacturers.
The ICCAS is the leading research and transfer centre for computer-assisted technologies and assistance systems in medical technology at the University of Leipzig. With innovative solutions and an interdisciplinary approach, it is driving forward the digital transformation in healthcare. In addition to other areas of research, the aim is to equip operating theatres with the latest information and communication technologies in order to increase the quality and speed of operations and relieve the burden on medical staff.
The use of digital twins makes it possible for the first time to determine the actual status of all SDC-enabled devices in the emergency vehicle. They provide comprehensive information about the condition of each individual device, required spare parts, consumables and maintenance needs. Regardless of the manufacturer, the ambulance operator can use a dashboard to manage all devices, view their status and immediately recognise when something is not working or is missing. Required spare parts can be ordered directly with a single click. The digital twin can be used for individual emergency vehicles as well as for the entire fleet.
Together with ICCAS, we are working on further applications for the digital twin in ambulances to make their use even more efficient and keep breakdowns to a minimum.
