Secure AI chatbot for the future of learning

The challenge

With telli, the FWU had a vision to create an AI chatbot specifically for schools: intuitive to use, compliant with data protection regulations and legally compliant. The application is designed to help teachers plan their lessons, create materials more quickly and teach pupils how to use it and question the results of the AI. The biggest challenges are the strict data protection and security requirements (GDPR, EU AI Act), barrier-free use on all end devices, stable operation for up to 2 million users, and secure login via VIDIS, a cross-border, GDPR-compliant identity management system for schools.

How we helped

XITASO and FWU are jointly developing the open-source chatbot telli for use in school lessons. We have further developed the system for productive use, optimised the technical architecture and implemented central interfaces. Building on this, we are expanding the chatbot with AI-supported functions that assist teachers in lesson preparation – for example, in creating assessment sheets – and enable learners to understand complex content interactively. In addition, we have implemented new features such as file uploads and image generation, and designed the platform to be user-centred and accessible. Our contribution also includes scalable operation, monitoring, and support for many thousands of users. In this way, we have created a secure, future-proof AI solution that combines educational benefits, data protection, and user-friendliness.
