Sustainable software modernisation during ongoing operations

Renewed production control for corrugated board plants

The challenge

BHS Corrugated’s software landscape has evolved continuously over many years and now forms a stable foundation for the company’s success. This mature architecture made it possible to reliably map complex processes and sustainably increase the efficiency of plant control.

However, with the advance of digitalisation, requirements increased significantly – especially with regard to the development of a new, future-proof generation of control systems. New functionalities had to be implemented under considerable time pressure, based on extensive, historically grown code, which also represented the central source of knowledge for the business logic.

The strong coupling to existing control systems posed an additional technical challenge: these systems not only had to continue to operate stably, but also had to be seamlessly transferred to a modern, scalable software architecture. The aim was to create a basis that could be expanded in the long term and meet the increasing demands on performance, modularity and integration capability.

BHS Corrugated Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH

BHS Corrugated Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH is the leading solution provider in the corrugated board industry. With more than 3,500 employees at its headquarters in Weiherhammer, Germany, and in more than 20 countries worldwide, the Lifecycle Partner is consistently strong across its entire range of products and services.

How we helped

In order to tackle the complex initial situation in a structured manner, we worked with BHS Corrugated to develop a modernisation strategy that takes into account both short-term milestones and a sustainable architecture for future developments. The existing software was analysed and translated into concrete requirements for a future-proof system. The connection to the IoT platform developed by XITASO creates the basis for flexible and reliable communication between the systems involved.

Thanks to our agile approach, we were able to deliver results early on and drive further development. The structured documentation of the domain and software architecture creates transparency, secures knowledge and facilitates long-term maintenance. Together with BHS Corrugated, we were ultimately able to ensure successful commissioning.

“The reliability of the team and their consistent willingness to develop solutions together have had a significant impact on the development partnership with XITASO – especially when it comes to introducing new processes and ensuring consistently high team quality. The greatest strength lay in the structured approach: dependencies were made transparent at an early stage, decisions were clearly communicated, and technical expertise in system architecture, DevOps and project management was evident at all times.”
