Remaining future-oriented and competitive in the age of digitization and Industry 4.0 is essential in mechanical and plant engineering. The selection of suitable technologies and components as well as a flexible, expandable system architecture are important components in this regard.
An in-depth knowledge of the controllers available on the market is of immense importance in order to be technologically up to date regarding control platforms and to be able to efficiently offer new features to customers. Because only those who know the advantages and disadvantages of different control types can decide on the right control system.

In addition to the systems themselves, BHS Corrugated also offers its customers innovative digital solutions.
As a digitization partner and expert in software engineering, XITASO has examined various control systems with regard to their capabilities and characteristics such as performance, maintainability and openness to modern software engineering. Controllers and engineering tools were extensively tested and evaluated with regard to their potential for modern, collaborative software development.
The selection of suitable controls is important for connecting OT and IT as closely and as well as possible, especially with regard to planned innovative features. The conscious and targeted implementation of state-of-the-art control systems thus makes it possible to network, control and monitor not only individual machines, but also entire lines, from a software perspective.
In particular, the evaluation of various control systems from the point of view of XITASO’s IT specialists was of great value for the OT experts from BHS Corrugated, as it allowed the IT perspective to be included in the decision-making process.
XITASO was able to create, with its evaluation, the basis for BHS to select the appropriate control systems for the feasibility of the desired features.
The implementation of the potential of Industry 4.0 in new innovative features of a production plant requires a smooth integration of OT and IT technologies. A viable control architecture for future features of the BHS production plants has been developed in a partnership between the OT experts from BHS Corrugated and the IT specialists from XITASO.
Throughout the project, the advantages of the agile approach, such as close cooperation with regular reviews in fast cycles, have once again proven themselves.
