What is an Asset Administration Shell (AAS)?

The Asset Administration Shell (AAS) is the digital twin of a product or plant – the foundation for Industry 4.0

Standardised Data

Uniform description of assets across their entire lifecycle

Interoperability

Cross-manufacturer data exchange through open standards

Data Sovereignty

Full control over your own data and access rights

From Open Source to Enterprise-Ready

What is Industrial BaSyx?

Eclipse BaSyx is the established open-source foundation for AAS. However, the step from a reference implementation to productive, maintainable and secure operation is a significant one. Industrial BaSyx closes this gap and turns Eclipse BaSyx into a reliable, scalable and maintainable enterprise solution for the mid-market.

Why do you need Industrial BaSyx?

  • When digital twins become business-critical, you need operations – not just technology.
  • Regulation, supply chains and standards are increasing the pressure to provide digital evidence in a structured and reliable manner – from the Digital Product Passport to VDI 2770, Catena‑X and Manufacturing‑X.
  • The standards and open‑source components already exist. In practice, however, productive adoption frequently fails due to operational, security, scaling and accountability challenges.

→ that is precisely what Industrial BaSyx was developed for

Built for productive use

    IDTA-compliant AAS
  • Manufacturer-independent, no vendor lock-in
  • Compatible with Catena-X and Manufacturing-X, and prospectively the DPP

Secure

  • Enterprise operations & governance by design
  • Traceable changes
  • Encryption, audit trails, retention
  • Guaranteed operational and data security at the highest level

Future-proof

  • Long-term platform (lifecycle & continued development)
  • Scalable & automatically provisionable
  • Ready for regulatory requirements / new use cases (AI-ready)

Industrial BaSyx is deployed exactly where you need it

→ for maximum interoperability, high flexibility and full data sovereignty.

XITASO makes Industrial BaSyx productive for your organisation.

Consulting & design of the Industrial‑BaSyx infrastructure

We design the right target architecture for your AAS platform – including deployment model, scaling, security & governance.

Integration into your IT landscape

We integrate Industrial BaSyx into your system landscape (e.g. IAM, data platforms, ERP/PLM/MES, interfaces, monitoring/logging), so that AAS does not become an isolated system.

Use‑case implementation with partner components (e.g. Neoception)

On the basis of Industrial BaSyx, we realise concrete applications – e.g. around VDI 2770, the Digital Product Passport and end-to-end digital product information – using specialised solutions from our partners.

Support & SLAs for Industrial BaSyx

We offer support models and service levels for productive operation – from incident handling to further development.

Digital twins are a central building block of tomorrow’s industry. With Industrial BaSyx, we are making Eclipse BaSyx production-ready and scalable together with Fraunhofer IESE and NetApp. This enables companies to realise their data spaces and applications such as the Digital Product Passport significantly faster.”

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Industrial BaSyx

What is the difference between Eclipse BaSyx and Industrial BaSyx?

Eclipse BaSyx is the open-source middleware developed and coordinated by Fraunhofer IESE – it forms the technological foundation for implementing the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) in Industry 4.0 environments. Industrial BaSyx is the production-ready enterprise solution that XITASO has built together with Fraunhofer IESE and NetApp on the basis of Eclipse BaSyx. It supplements the open-source foundation with professional support, flexible deployment options, enterprise-grade security features, defined SLAs and a single point of contact – so that you can make the step from prototype to productive operation without risk.

Which standards are supported (AAS/IDTA)?

Industrial BaSyx supports all relevant Industry 4.0 and interoperability standards:

  • IEC 61406: Identification Link for machine-readable product identification
  • IEC 63278: Asset Administration Shell as the standardised digital representation of assets
  • VDI 2770: Structured handover of technical documentation
  • IDS Data Space Protocol: Secure and sovereign data exchange protocols for data spaces
  • OAuth 2: Standardised identity management for the integration of existing Identity Providers (IdPs)

Through its alignment with open standards, Industrial BaSyx is interoperable, manufacturer-independent and future-proof.

How flexible is the deployment of Industrial BaSyx?

Industrial BaSyx is designed for use in a wide variety of IT infrastructures and supports three deployment variants:

  • On-Premises: Full operation in your own data centre for maximum data control
  • Public Cloud: Scalable operation on common cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS)
  • Hybrid: Combination of on-premises and cloud, e.g. for edge-based data acquisition with centralised cloud analysis

The containerised architecture based on Kubernetes enables automated provisioning, flexible scaling and high availability of 99.9% through redundant architecture.

Am I prepared for the Digital Product Passport (DPP) with Industrial BaSyx?

Yes. Industrial BaSyx is already the ideal foundation for the Digital Product Passport today. Prospectively, all relevant IDTA submodels for the DPP will be natively supported. In addition, XITASO and Fraunhofer IESE are jointly developing the DPP API for BaSyx, meaning you are building on an actively developed, standards-compliant stack – and are always one step ahead of regulatory requirements such as the EU Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR) and the EU Battery Regulation.

Is Industrial BaSyx compatible with data spaces?

Yes. Industrial BaSyx is designed as a Digital Twin Registry and is therefore fully compatible with Catena-X and other data space initiatives. The Manufacturing-X (MX) protocol profiles Leo and Hercules are supported, enabling standards-compliant connectivity to industrial data spaces. This allows you to exchange product data sovereignly and in compliance with regulations with partners, customers and authorities along the entire supply chain.

How is data security handled in Industrial BaSyx?

Data security is of the highest priority in Industrial BaSyx – at both application and operational level:

  • IDTA Security Specification (Part 4): Full implementation of the official AAS security specification with Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) for fine-grained, role-based rights management
  • OAuth 2 / Identity Provider: Seamless integration of existing IdP solutions (e.g. Keycloak, Azure AD)
  • Data encryption: Encryption of data at rest and in transit
  • Backup & Restore: Automated backup mechanisms for reliable operation
  • Logging & Monitoring: Comprehensive logging of all access events and system events
  • Retention Policies: Configurable data retention policies for compliance requirements

How is Industrial BaSyx integrated into existing systems?

The integration strategy depends on your specific requirements and the desired use cases – such as machine-readable customer information, Digital Product Passport or production data acquisition. In principle, two proven approaches are available:

  • Partnership with Neoception: For a rapid, configuration-based integration of ERP, PIM and MES systems via pre-built adapters and an established platform integration
  • Individual solution by XITASO: For complex or bespoke integration scenarios, we support you from architecture consulting through to productive implementation

In both cases, you benefit from standardised APIs based on the AAS specification, which reduce integration costs and avoid vendor lock-in.

How do we get started with Industrial BaSyx as quickly as possible?

Getting started is straightforward and structured:

  1. Initial meeting: We clarify your current situation, objectives and initial use cases in a no-obligation consultation
  2. Requirements analysis: Together we define which systems are to be integrated, which standards are to be met and which use cases are to be prioritised
  3. Workshop: Optional – a targeted workshop on technical integration, architecture design and rollout planning
  4. Individual proposal: You receive a tailored proposal – transparent, fair and aligned to your company size
